Track and Field competitors are gearing up for the playoffs, and San Marcos’ Makenzie Fauver and Justin Hess showed at last weekend’s Santa Barbara County Championships that they’re ready for a solid run at league titles. and CIF.

The Royals’ two junior stars were honored as Athletes of the Week at Monday’s Santa Barbara Sports Roundtable press luncheon at Harry’s Plaza Cafe. Their pair combined for five titles in the county encounter, helping the Royals win the contest title.

Fauver broke 16 seconds for the first time in winning the 100 hurdles as she clocked a personal best 15.85. She also won the 300 yells (47.84) and was second in the triple jump with a PR of 32-11.25.

Hess was a three-time county champion. He won the 400 (50.730, 200 (22.81) in a winning 4×400 relay. The San Marcos footballer was also part of a 4×100 relay in third place.

This week, Fauver and Hess will compete in the Channel League Championships in Santa Ynez.

Honorable mention picks for this week’s award include Caitlyn Early (San Marcos softball), Avery Ball (Dos Pueblos women’s lacrosse), Shams Jahangir-Arshad (San Marcos golf), and Ryan Speshyock (Dos Pueblos baseball) .

Athletes of the week are determined by a vote of local sports media members. Coaches are encouraged to nominate deserving student-athletes. Applications should be sent to [email protected] before Sunday at 10 a.m.
