The club have recruited experienced sports lawyer John Devine, from Muckle LLP, to their legal team. Devine, a United fan, was one of six Chelsea Foundation trustees who were put in charge of running Chelsea in March before then-owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Newcastle had announced in February “one or more experienced commercial lawyers to oversee the legal aspects of the club’s large and complex commercial operations”.
The job description gave a telling insight into the global ambitions of the club’s new owners.
There was also a hint at new expected sponsorship deals being struck by the club, which is 80% owned by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund following the takeover last October.
He said: “We are at the beginning of a journey.
“The new owners of Newcastle United have one ambition: to be the best football club in the world.
“To meet this ambition, the club aims to create a ‘best in class’ business in all respects, and as part of this, we are looking to hire an experienced commercial lawyer(s) to oversee the legal aspects of the club’s vast and complex business operations, including high-value sponsorship deals, at the start of what promises to be a very exciting time for the club.
“The candidate will also work with the General Counsel and External Counsel on a variety of legal issues in the club’s business, including player transfers, intellectual property issues, corporate governance and compliance matters. .”
